Dappled Cities
Zounds
Dappled Cities have gone under the radar in the U.S. for the past few years. Their last release Granddance gained some recognition, but not what it deserved. On Zounds, they have stepped it up, producing a fluid album that seamlessly takes you on a journey. For Zounds, Dappled Cities got help from Justin Meldal-Johnsen, who has played with of the best and brightest in rock music including Beck and Nine Inch Nails. The electronically driven album does not disappoint, starting out strong with the song “Hold Your Back.” Tim Derricourt’s voice is at times reminiscent of Wayne Coyne’s (of Flaming Lips) while the instrumentals are led by synthesizers. As they transition between songs, you unknowingly follow their lead. The songs are catchy, especially “Slow for Me My Island’, “The Night is Young at Heart,” and “Miniature Alas”. Yes, this band has come a long way since their days as Periwinkle.
