Naphta – Long Time Burning (Review)

Naphta

Long Time Burning

At the forefront of the drums ‘n’ bass scene is DJ Naphta unleashing his debut album proper, Long Time Burning after breaking onto the scene in Dublin a decade ago. The reggae, dancehall, funk, soul and hip-hop cocktail he serves up makes for an album drenched in cool.

In an inspired collage of samples and styles, Long Time Burning offers fresh track after fresh track, starting with ‘Can’t Stop/Won’t Stop,’ quite possibly the philosophy tying the album together. ‘Street Dancing’ captures the essence of Naphta’s project, as he pours tribal drums over an electronic collage and layers in a social commentary dedicated to the dance world.

What makes Long Time Burning unique is that it sounds relevant for today’s music fans’nothing outdated or flavorless here. Naphta, founding member and resident DJ with Bassbin, has shaped the jungle scene and continues to do so. While the first portion of the record shines, the later portion’from ‘My Heart Beating’ through the last track, ‘Long Story,’ is stellar.
