La Roux
La Roux
La Roux couldn’t be more relevant if they tried. 21- year old mohawked brit Elly Jackson, who performs under ‘La Roux’ along with producer and writer Ben Langmaid, currently have a super-strong presence on the UK charts thanks to hits such as ‘Bulletproof’ and ‘In For The Kill’. Despite the ‘two-hit wonder’ potential of such perfectly crafted pop, La Roux’s selft-titled debut doesn’t disappoint, pulling obvious influences from the Human League and Depeche Mode.
Tracks like ‘I’m Not Your Toy’ and ‘Armour Love’ intelligently recycle 80s synthpop while keeping us in the future rather than on the B-side of a Debbie Deb record (as so many 80s-influenced artists stupidly go). La Roux’s songwriting is strong as well: Elly’s soulful soprano covers all the basics of lost love and crappy relationships while keeping your toe tapping (or whatever part of your body you enjoy to move while listening to good pop music). Similar to the up and coming niche bands before them, as long as La Roux continues to keep things interesting and current, they should have no problem extending their newfound acclaim.
