Patriot

It is a difficult task to make an instrumental album in the realm of rock music. I know that in my own rock music collection, there are only a select few songs that are instrumental. When I listen to many instrumental bands, I have a difficult time focusing on the music without thinking about what it would sound like with vocals.

Cougar proves that their music does not need to be lead by vocals. They’re professionals: they know exactly what they’re doing. Patriot has a certain care a certain care and precision, each beat and tone has a calculated place. Cougar uses interesting guitar tones and drum beats, mixing different genres and sounds. Yes “Rhinelander” has vocals in it, but it is not the focus of the song, the album is undoubtedly guitar driven. The whole album feels like a trance: they hook you in and leave you asking for more.

This album definitely put Cougar on my radar. For the little that I knew about them before this album, they surpassed my expectations, especially thinking in terms of instrumental rock music. For someone who’s not really into math rock, Cougar conquered and widened my horizons.
