General Elekctriks – Good City For Dreamers

‘Take Back The Instant,” the opening track on Good City For Dreamers, sums up the album well, clean production over heavy drums, keys and light vocals. The voice and beats are by Herve Salters (of Honeycut) who has a penchant for breakbeats and quirky lyrics. Unlike his last album, Cliquety Kliqk (a mostly instrumental project besides a track with Lateef) the new project sags at many points due to the soft, distracting, and sometimes clich’ vocals.

Not that Herve is a bad singer, but his writing and delivery detracts from the lush production. He comes of real whiny (especially on “Helicopter” and “Engine Kicking In”) and other attempts of inflection (whispering, “Get up, Get up, Get up”) are completely corny. Other lyrics are real trite (”David Lynch Moments”) and are hard to ignore because they’re mixed loudly above the beats.

Two tracks, however, do succeed: The vocal-less “You Don’t Listen” shows Salters’ production expertise, cohesively layering sounds into arrangements that can hold your interest. The other highpoint, “Cottons Of Inertia,” has Salters sounding like Gilbert O’Sullivan over a sunny beat that’s perfect for lounging. These work well because Salters makes his production the center point, unlike most the album, where weak vocals dominate and he comes off trying too hard.”
