Cheap Thrills Volume 1
Machines Don’t Care, Speaker Junk, Action Man or one half of The Count & Sinden-whatever you call him, Joshua ‘Herv’ Harvey is the man of a million monikers’and one busy son-of-a-gun. An impressive discography’including remixes for everyone from Sam Sparro to Calvin Harris’has made Herv’s name synonymous with big-room fidget house and now he’d like it to be just as synonymous with his young label, Cheap Thrills. Just over a year old, the label has already put forth the ubiquitous ‘Mars’ by Fake Blood as well as Herv’s own material including ‘Rikkalicious,’ a collaboration with Kissy Sell Out. With tons more on the back burner, there’s already enough for a compilation to showcase what Cheap Thrills is all about.
The majority of the compilation is what one would expect, ranging from the frenetic ‘Seelikio’ by Max Morrel to the much-touted wobbly ‘UFO’ by Jack Beats. However, a few surprises are buried within. Fake Blood’s ‘Fix Your Accent’ is a bubbly, upbeat and sample driven tune in the vein of artists like nu-disco house Duck Sauce and Herv’s ‘Baseball Bat’ is an angry dubstep voyage with screaming female vocals. Bonus – a mixed CD by Herv’ himself is also included and it’s chock full of exclusive material. There’s a drawback though. Technically, the mixed CD isn’t consistently strong, which is too bad. This type of music seems to parlay better in a mix setting so unless you’re a fidget fiend, listening to the compilation’s sixteen individual tracks could be taxing.
