FabricLive 47

Much to my surprise, Toddla T’s FabricLive.47 stumbles out of the starting gate, lacking the immediate injection of energy, the fundamental kick-start in many DJ’s studio mixes. But just as one might expect from the British DJ, Toddla T does the Usain Bolt and pulls away from the mediocrity of the first three tracks, dropping two dubstep bombs in Backyard Dog’s ‘Baddest Ruffest (Pipes & Slippers Mix)’ and Toddla T’s ‘Fill Up Mi Portion Remix’. So here is where the mix should take a turn north, right? Not exactly.

As the mix progresses, Toddla T drops listeners into an abyss of abrasive and unfortunately vibe-reducing chaos by way of erratic synth bleeps, beaming laser blasts, and a bevy of obscure drum samples. The sound effect-laden ‘Anaconda Safe’ is the undeniable buzz kill of the mix, as it is nearly impossible to decipher a coherent melody or danceable rhythm. And so continues this downward spiral, as FabricLive.47 draws to an uninspiring, anticlimactic, and quite abrupt close. Did he forget some tracks? Fall asleep at the decks? Whichever it May be, FabricLive.47’s disappointing finale cannot even be redeemed by its final (and rather out-of-place) track: Caspa’s remix of Deadmau5’s ‘I Remember’. In what was anticipated as one of Fabric’s more notable releases this year, Toddla T’s FabricLive.47 is merely another studio mix underachieved.
