Released through Paul Oakenfold’s imprint, Perfecto Records, the Israeli duo that comprise Infected Mushroom – Amit ‘Duvdev’ Duvedevani and Erez Eisen – have set about transforming an encounter with a shark into an hour’s worth of dance music dashed with shards of metal throughout. Being of the impression that this would be some sort of psych-folk record or a downer rock release based on the group’s name and the cover art, hearing Jonathan Davis – yeah, the guy from Korn – on Legend of the Black Shawarma’s first single, ‘Smashing The Opponent,’ wasn’t only a bummer, but just short of obnoxious.
Imagine entering a clothing store, one where you most likely wouldn’t be able to afford anything, browsing for a moment only to realize that skanky socialites and dudes with the clap are the only other customers around. Legend of the Black Shawarma would be sound-tracking this tableaux. To mitigate that, creating such dense pieces of music unquestionably requires a good deal of talent. And considering that the duo that makes up Infected Mushroom have been at it for over a decade, Duvedevani and Eisen demand a modicum of respect. Unfortunately, URB readers might not be the ones to afford that deference. Dance at your own peril.
