In a genre where staying relevant more than a year is a mark of genius, DJ Muggs’ two-decade long career is a testament both to his musical and businessman abilities. The New York-born deejay headed out to Cali in 1985 and, with Cypress Hill, would produce seven studio albums including hip-hop classics Cypress Hill (1991) and Black Sunday (1993). As a producer for hire, Muggs outsourced his talents to countless emcees, producing whole albums with GZA, Planet Asia and Tricky, as well as classics like Ice Cube’s “Check Yo Self” and House of Pain’s “Jump Around.” The latter, one of the most enduring hip-hop songs ever produced, has long been a ubiquitous feature at every stadium, frat house and block party around the world.
After two albums with his crew Soul Assassins, the producer recently returned with Intermission and assembled a cast that includes everyone from Prodigy and RZA to Bun B and B-Real. We caught up with Muggs from his spot in L.A. to discuss the new album, longevity, and the good ole days.
