Devendra Banhart and Six Organs of Admittance (Live Review)

Picture 30 Devendra Banhart and Six Organs of Admittance (Live Review)

For some reason, Wednesday was the day for concerts in the Southern California area. In LA, you had the Dead Weather opening Jack White’s Third Man Record Store in the middle of the day, Deerhunter, Michael Gondry and Friends, and M.I.A. at night. Up in Santa Barbara, it was no different, both Six Organs of Admittance and Devendra Banhart were playing at separate venues, thankfully at different times.

Six Organs of Admittance and The Master Musicians of Bukkake both played at Muddy Waters. The Master Musicians of Bukkake started off the night and to say they were weird is an understatement. The singer looked as if he were wearing a fishnet that caught algae, while the other members wore black robes and red scarves over their heads. They played a lot of weird ambient noises, while this green algae was singing and holding burning incense. Yes, it had the feeling of something religious, but when you looked at the guy in green, it brought you back to reality. When he sang, his voice ranged from growls to being high pitched and slightly soothing. So all in all, one of the most bizarre concert experiences I’ve ever had.
