MUNGOLIAN JET SET: Giving it Away

Interview with Mungolian Jet Set's Pal Nyhus

URB: What’s your studio set up, how do you fit this orchestra in your head into it?
NYHUS: It’s in Oslo. I don’t want it in the house. I need to have a workplace. It’s just the two of us. I can only work in the daytime and I’m not a morning person at all. I think we work too little, actually. But at least the tracks are made.
URB: How did you end up with the Smalltown Sound crowd?
NYHUS: I’ve know Joakim [Haugland], the record label owner, for many, many years. We did a record three years ago on Jazzland Records. It was our take on what jazz was as seen through our glasses. What Smalltown has done is gather all these “electronic” people into one room. I think it’s good to work with people who live in your own town.

URB: Are you doing a lot of festivals for this CD?
NYHUS: Not really, just a couple. We’re doing mostly live shows. We’re trying to have a regular band play with us. So it’s kind of good that we haven’t done a lot of big gigs lately. It gives a chance to get to know each other as performers.

URB: How’s the scene changed since you started?
NYHUS: I’m really kind of old-school, I’ve been around since the early ’90s. It’s more full now, there’s more people. There’s more of a fusion, experimental [thing] happening now. When most people think of Norwegian music they think of disco, electronic and death metal. But now, the sounds are more mixed up.

URB: What else have you got going on?
NYHUS: I’ve got my own label, Luna Flick, and Knut and I are working on a new album. It’s going to be just our own stuff. For this CD, the title says it all. It was full of other people. We actually had enough for a third CD, but we decided not to do that. The next album will be just us, and more like a pop record. Well, our kind of pop music.

URB: What’s going on with your blog? It looks like it’s broken.
NYHUS: It doesn’t work at the moment. We’re working on it. We have a friend working on adding music, videos, pictures, a place for comments.

URB: People love to comment.
NYHUS: Yes, they do. But you have to do what’s right for you, or why bother?
