Last night in downtown LA, pro audio company Funktion 1 did a test run of their new gun-clap optimized sound system for 500 lucky revelers who paid $25 each to hear “clap-bang-bang” in crystal clear audiophile perfection. To help with the test, the speaker company teamed with the NEET record label and it’s owner, Grammy nominated rapper MIA.
From an sound engineer’s perspective, the test was only a partially successful. Yes, the repeat gun-claps were clear and loud, punchy on the pistol fire with good resonance. Sadly, the event itself had it’s share of hitches. For starters, extensive pre-door sound check meant things were running late from the get go. Despite all tickets being sold pre-sale, the line to get in was long and cumbersome, which meant opening DJs Them Jeans and Dan-Oh warmed up a less than enthusiastic crowd. What’s worse, nobody, it seemed, could confirm whether or not South Rawkas Crew ever played at all. Things began to act up when Pase Rock hit the stage, offering up a rare solo MC performance, followed by
