E.A.R.T.H. Crew’s album, The Grassroots: From The Ground Up start out very dark and gloomy. The initial track, Clones sets the tone and it doesn’t change till the middle of the album, but don’t get take that the wrong way. While dark, the tracks are produced intelligently with exceptional flow from all four emcees in the group. Their best song is Favorite Places, a tribute to places all over the world. The violin and piano is fused well to produced a catchy repetitive beat that makes your head bop. After this positive track, the album goes back into the darkside with Feel Good Music and Do It Big. Then of course, how can you forget Sexin’ After Textin’? With a title like that, why are they not on TV? Sampling the sounds of a Sidekick cellphone, the song talks not about phone sex but text sex(?) and follows the recent trend of using techie terms.
Overall, E.A.R.T.H. Crew offers the listener a different creative sound that doesn’t get old quickly. Although many of the tracks are dark, they manage to be different from each other, each offering a different style. Lyrically, no one in the group is Talib Kweli but their verses follow each other well and no one is left behind.
