Picture 1 RIP DJ Josh Link (Explanation & Apology)

Yesterday afternoon, NYC drum’n'bass DJ Josh Link (aka Missing Link) was killed in a accident on the Williamsburg Bridge. We mistakenly reported that it was DJ Josh Wink who had passed away. We discovered our error and ran a correction within 30 minutes of the first posting. We apologize to Josh Wink for the error, and offer our condolences to the friends and family of Josh Link.

We first heard word of the tragedy via a promoter from Philadelphia, Josh Wink’s home town. Our founder Raymond Roker posted to his Twitter inquiring about the rumor, and heard back from a friend at MTV in New York saying she had heard the same thing and had details involving the accident. At that point, we posted the “news” on URB.com, stating that the information had come from two separate sources and requesting more information from anyone who had it. This was not intended to be the final statement on the matter, but rather a sincere and earnest attempt to find out what had happened to a personal friend of URB. We also proceeded to call folks close to Wink, including the pregnant wife of his booking agent, whom we gave quite a scare (sorry Jes).

Within minutes, we got feedback that our information was indeed wrong and that the individual involved in the accident was named Josh Link. We were naturally relived that it wasn’t our friend Josh, and ran a correction.

But before the ink on the blog was dry, we came to find out that Josh Link was in fact DJ Missing Link, a known and respected DJ in hte NYC area. Although we didn’t personally know him, we spoke with several friends of Link’s, including DJ Lauren Flax and promoter Joey Rubin, all of whom expressed to us how important Link was to the NYC community.

At that point, we had set the blog post to ‘Hidden’ to give us time to properly correct our error. However, Google already had the post cached and folks were unknowingly entering the back door and leaving testimonials to Link.

This morning, I recieved an e-mail Josh’s sister Sara. During the night, one of our contributors—who happened to have witnessed the tragic event—had posted some details of what she saw within the Comments section of the posting. Sara had founded the account and asked that we remove the post out of courtesy to the the family. We of course obliged, which brings us to now…

Again, we apologize to anyone who was upset, both friends of Wink and Link. In this hyper-paced world of instant news, we make every attempt to convey correct information. But we will also continue to utilize URB.com, as well as our Twitter, Facebook and any other forms of digital communication to connect with our community and utilize these resources as a platform for conversation.

Thank you for reading.
