The New Boyz don’t show, but Ben J catches up the next day spelling out the group’s vision for jerkin’ and their first full length CD entitled Skinny Jeans and A Mic, which drops September 15.
“I mean, everyone knows us as the “You’re A Jerk” song,” says Ben J. “We’re going to make jerkin’ songs still, but we made other songs before jerkin’ even came out.” Like all the other jerkin’ crews, Ben J speaks constantly about diversification with the savvy of a seasoned businessman. The tactic is to avoid falling into the musical black hole that is the one hit wonder.
“With the album you can expect up-tempo songs, R&B tracks for the ladies, and the tracks you just want to bob your head to. It’s a cool little record that we got going on.”
Ben J speaks with a truly heartfelt confidence about the future of the movement he was so integral in creating. “It’s going far in the music industry,” he says, and his passion draws you in. At times it is easy to forget the youth on the other side of the telephone line, but then he mentions the BET Awards. “When I saw Keyshia Cole at the BET Awards, I didn’t think I could be so star struck. She is so sexy, the girl you need in your life.”
The driving force behind a fledging musical movement or just trying to make it through another day of high school, with 17 year old males it always seems to come back to the women.
