Bryan Poole is not normal. In fact, he’s far from it: With all his talking of other-worldly influences and projects, you wouldn’t guess he’s the guitarist for Of Montreal, a band that is basically creatively run by one person (if you aren’t aware, Kevin Barnes writes all the music for the band). However, Bryan is not in any way held back by the setup: He is overwhelmingly innovative, with his hand in a number of projects, including The Late B.P. Helium, his current solo project, and Instant Glitch, Of Montreal’s psychedelic side project. Whether it’s afrobeat, krautrock or soul, BP is involved with it in one way or another.
Are you enjoying being in Chicago today?
Bryan: Besides the rain, I’m very excited to be here. We were here two years ago, and we had a great time. I like playing Chicago a lot and there’s a lot of things about the city that I enjoy.
What are same of the main differences for you between a club or venue gig and a festival?
You can look everybody in the eye even if you want to. At a festival show, you’re playing for a lot of people who Maybe have heard of you, but are checking you out for the first time. It seems like the more people you get together, it’s kind of like a mass mentality. If everyone is in a positive frame of mind, and hopefully the sun will come out before we play and everyone will be that way. Generally, we just need to massage them and they wanna have a good time.
