PAPER ROUTE GANGSTAZ: Spaceage Southern Hospitality

Now signed with Koch Records, Paper Route is getting ready to drop an EP titled Rocket Fuel and its first single “Keyshia Cole” is not only a weed anthem that should logically join the ranks of “5 On It” and, well, pretty much every Redman song ever, the linguistic chromosomes in “Keyshia Cole”’s blood, teach us a good amount about Alabama slang. Mata explains, “When we were getting it in, we couldn’t be casually talking reckless on the phone like ‘Hey! I got that A-1 kush, man!’  So, Kish became slang for Kush and then Keyshia sounds kinda like Kish. So it started like you’d call and ask ‘is my girl over there?’ they say ‘Who?’ I say ‘my girl Keyshia.’ Now it’s become that you call up and say “Hey I gotta get my CD, I need that Keyshia Cole CD!” Mata proceeds to explain the immensely complex and thorough codes that correspond to different calibers of crops, some of which include: Reggie Miller, Reggie Bush, Short-dude, Midget and so on.

The quasi-official video for “Keyshia Cole” is also the latest piece of evidence that the quartet is fully cognizant of how to navigate the current DIY-powered tundra of the music industry. The crew’s self-created buzz from “Wood Grain” would land them under the management of Dan Weisman, who also manages Wale. And, just like “Woodgrain” came to prominence by sneaking through the internet’s nooks and crannies with cockroach-like efficiency, the video for “Keyshia Cole”- a montage of classic (and not-so-classic) stoner films, is gunning for similar ubiquity. Collectively, the group seems to feel that, that goal is certainly within reach, “We’ve always had a great street fan base,” says Dawgy Baggz. “and now, the suburban kids and the hipster kids love us too.” “Yeah those hipster kids got great Keyshia connects” Mata jovially chimes in.

As archetypical albums and high-budget videos go extinct, the status-quo of the past will surely follow. While the skyscraper lined metropolitans that have unconditionally housed the fat-cats of rap music begin to progressively crumble, a new generation of organically raised artists will emerge to take its place. So let Sam Malone revel in his far-gone days of Red Sox-glory. Meanwhile, watch as the Paper Route Gangstaz, and the rest of the Woodys, emerge as the new sluggers of rap.
