Lusine
A Certain Distance
Fans of ambient down tempo beats are sure to know, and revere Lusine. His use of reverby toy sounding synthesizers and smooth downt tempo rhythm has come to redefine the genre. Since his debut release in 1999, Lusine has been consistently putting out solid releases, constantly changing and enriching his music with each one. A Certain Distance is no exception. With this one Lusine stretches a little farther from ambient and into pop music. Of course, this does not mean anything bad. In fact, his combination of ambient chords and filtered-processed synths with lyrics and singing is as meaningful and introspective as some of his more ambient works. Some of the songs are even slightly reminiscent of Portishead, especially Twilight and Two Dots.
However, as with every great album, there is a lot of variation in the songs throughout. Some material on this album are very typical Lusine and some are not. Overall, the quality of this release is top-notch. Every song is good. The only thing holding it back from greatness is its flow from song to song. Some of the greatest albums wax and wane, like the artist is telling a story. A Certain Distance is great, but its missing that little extra to make it perfect.
