URB: You guys have done so many shows, what’s been the craziest performance thus far?
Kim: Well I feel like just two weeks ago, we did Pier 54 with Flosstradamus.
Watch Matt & Kim perform “Daylight” at Pier 54:
URB: I saw those pictures, the crowd just kept going back!
Matt: It blew our minds.
Kim: Yeah, we haven’t done our show in New York for a while, so when we showed up, we kinda walked down the Pier and I was like Fuck, this shit is big.
Matt: It’s huge. It’s like a city block long.
URB: Yeah, that thing is not messing around.
Kim: No, it’s not. So when we got in I was like Oh fuck, do people like us? But as soon as it got close to doors, this line started forming.
Matt: It was a block long. It was like I walked down the line over like a half-mile and I then I just turned around like, This is crazy. I forgot what the final tally is, someone told me, but it was filled. And to do it with Team Robespierre, who are friends of ours from Brooklyn and to have Flosstradamus come on before us, it felt great. It’s kinda weird, looking back, even compared to the stage we played for Lollapalooza and all the festivals in Europe and whatever, it could’ve been the most people we’ve ever played for. And it was mostly people who knew us.
URB: You guys have an incredibly diverse fan base. That being said, do you find it difficult to perform for all your fans, and do you feel like making that connection is important?
Kim: The funny thing is, when we started, we would only do all-ages show, we didn’t want to leave anybody out.
Matt: We wanted to be all-inclusive.
Kim: All-inclusive. But what we started figuring out by only doing all ages shows was that sometimes people who are in their late 20s, 30s, don’t wanna go to an all-ages show. And so then we kind of had this debate where we tried to mix it up. The last time we were in Chicago it was 21+, the next time we come do our show in Chicago it’s all ages. We try to kind of make everyone happy.
Matt: But the one thing you realize is that you can’t make everyone happy. It used to really weigh on me. I’d get emails like Man, I can’t go to your show, that’s messed up and some like Man, what fucking jerks and some like Man, I wanted to come to your show but I couldn’t even drink, so I just took off. You’re gonna piss people off any way you do it—
Kim: So we try to piss different people off at different times. And we just didn’t even realize this whole weird money thing of it—like if you do an all ages show your rates get cut in half and like, that’s crazy shit! And the fucked up thing is when they say, “Ok, if you’re gonna drink, you’re gonna go to this corner,” and then the show is just awkward.
Matt: And there’s a definitely a lot of politics in it then just saying yes or just saying no.
