Matt and Kim are great people. From the moment you see them, whether they are taking the stage at Pitchfork or running in the nude from NYC police in Times Square (as seen in their video for “Lessons Learned”… I’m sure they learned something from that experience), they are bound to put a smile on your face. The Brooklyn natives have been making music for a while now, and they finally seem to be getting some mainstream recognition, although they have had an incredibly loyal fan base since their birth. Combining Matt’s messy voice and rapid synth melodies with the bang of Kim’s drum, the two have a system that has been working well for quite some time. Although the second day of Pitchfork experienced generally gloomy weather, the clouds seemed to part just for Matt and Kim’s performance. They went into some dance party covers, including “Samir’s Theme” and “Hip-Hop,” keeping the crowd on their feet for the duration of their set. Kim even had a dance solo, where she tried to imitate Beyonce’s booty drop after becoming inspired at B’s Madison Square Garden performance. The duo closes with “Daylight,” their biggest hit to date, mostly due to its placement in the newest Bacardi ad campaign. The crowd can’t seem to get enough, and it seems Matt and Kim’s true aim is to make them smile just as big as Kim does throughout the entire performance. Mission accomplished.
URB: Is there more of an intensity when you guys are performing at festivals because there are so many people?
Kim: Festivals are a little more relaxed. It’s kind of more chill.
Matt: I don’t know, it’s sort of a weird. Ok, when you’re having a show and your show isn’t sold out before the doors open, it’s kind of like having a party. And you put out everything, you got your beer, you set up for a bunch of people to show up. And you’re just like Oh man, I hope my friends show up! But when you’re doing a festival, it takes that pressure off, which is nice. You’re just hanging out—
Kim: I guess that’s the only pressure I really feel at shows, like Are people gonna show up?
Matt: But the other half of that question, “Do we do it the same?” No matter what size the show, we do it the same.
Kim: If it was a basement, if it was a venue, if it was a festival.
Matt: It’s always like, we put it all in. Unless like, you’re really sick or something.
