Pictureplane – Dark Rift (Review)

Pictureplane

Dark Rift

Bands like HEALTH and Crystal Castles have seemed to bridge the gap between ravers and rockers. These bands do not stray far from one another and now there is another name to add into the mix, Pictureplane. Pictureplane, otherwise known as Travis Egedy, is currently on tour with HEALTH, labelmates on Lovepump United. Pictureplane’s music seems to fit comfortably in between these two bands, not too danceable, not too noisey, with vocals that aren’t too distorted. Raw, but completely electronic. And yes, he’s causing just as much of a ruckus.

One of the strengths of Dark Rift is the song titles. Many bands tend to forget the importance of titles, but Pictureplane uses this as an oppotunity to express his creativity, with titles such as “Trance Doll,” “Boys in Blush,” and “Goth Star”. The first track “Solid Gold” sets the tone for the rest of the album. You can’t help but think of the cheesy 80s show with headbands and spandex and the disco sounds in this song help in creating this image. Egedy doesn’t take himself too seriously and has a sense of humor when it comes to Pictureplane’s genre.

At times, Dark Rift is a bit too ravey for my liking, but the album still proves to be strong. It’s definitely a nighttime album and moments feel as though I should be either in a car commercial or a nightclub. “5th Sun” and “Cyclical Cyclical” are great tracks, with heavy keyboards and catchy drum beats. “Transparent Now” seems to be a more serious track, with a certain darkness in the instrumentation. Overall, Dark Rift is a bit difficult to get swept into at times, although it seems seeing it live would add another great dynamic to the experience of these tracks.
