Cool Kids Interview: On-set at the Cool Kids video shoot

URB: There are a lot of artists that are stuck here. They don’t really break out as much as you guys have. I wanted to know what you think the reason is that you were able to go from a local to an international scene, and why these artists- as great as they may be, as whatever as they may be- can’t really break to the next level.
Chuck Inglish: That’s a good question man. I feel like the music we make has a lot to do with us and who we are. We are really receptive to other people. We got a lot of friends that do different things, that dress different, that listen to different shit. So When you know those types of people and those are the people you play your music for when you make it like, “these are my friends, listen to my music,” you are already making music that appeals to different types of people. And we aren’t trying to appeal to the masses; we’re just trying to appeal to our friends. I think that and not really trying to be something; we didn’t try to be this, this is who we are. And it turned into something that people really digged. And that’s the most important part, just be yourself.

URB: When was the moment or collection of moments when you knew this was gonna be something big?
Chuck Inglish: Shit, I just knew that the whole time. I never wanted it to be for certain people, I wanted it to be for people who like rap. It makes a big difference when you’re doing it for people who like a certain style of music and not doing it for a certain type of people because you can’t win that way. If you’re a rock band and you’re making rock music for people who love rock music, it’s easier to become a great rock band. If you’re making rock music for people who like rock music, you might fail. That’s not the type of gamble I’m trying to take.
URB: Who’s new in the game- either in rap or not- that you guys really respect and are following?
Chuck Inglish: One of our boys here, Chip The Ripper. Pac Div, those are like are brothers. Dom Kennedy. We got a lot of people who we’re cool with. Asher Roth is one of my really good friends. Even though his buzz is through the roof, Drake’s been my boy for a minute. It’s cool to see a lot of people we’ve seen start that are now like new generation shit- I’m glad I’m apart of it too.
