New Tales to Tell- A Tribute to Love and Rockets

Doing a successful cover is a difficult task. Not only does a band have to show their respect to the artist whom they are covering, but they have to add their own personal, unique touch to the song. Many of the acts on New Tales to Tell successfully step up to this challenge and pay homage to Love and Rockets.

This tribute album is unique in that it features artists from a wide array of musical backgrounds, mainly under the umbrella of rock. Hipsters can “meh” their way into the Dandy Warhols’ “Inside the Outside” while scenesters can sink their teeth into Blaqk Audio’s “No New Tale to Tell”.

Many of the artists on this tribute surpassed my expectations, such as Puscifer, War Tapes, and the mind-boogling pairing of Monster Magnet vs Adrian Young (of No Doubt). They provide excellent tracks that have their signature sound, which May appeal to an audience who otherwise May not listen to Love and Rockets. Sweethead took their track “Life in Laralay” as an opportunity to expose themselves as a band (their debut will be released in Sep). Singer Serrina Sims deep vocals are showcased in this song along with Troy Van Leeuwen’s guitar work. Flaming Lips grace the album with their presence on “Kundalini Express”. Yes, Love and Rockets do lack intonation at times, but Flaming Lips decide to step it up by making the vocals sound more like a robot. True Flaming Lips style.

This album gave me a new appreciation for not only the bands and artists on this album, but for the music of Love and Rockets. Success!
