24 Carat Black, The – Gone (Review)

24 Carat Black, The

Gone

From beginning to end this CD is classic. Classic in the music, and in the quality. 24 Carat Black is one of the most underrated acts in the history of soul music. If you’ve been sleeping on them until now, this CD will change your mind.

With music composed by famed arranger Dale Warren, the 24 Carat Black made music that told stories of the struggle in the inner city. Over incredible, flowing, complex drum patterns they tell a story about life. At the time, their music sort of dissipated. They went mostly unnoticed in the 60s and 70s while they were actually making music. However, their music had a huge cult following in the hip hop community, which inspired reissues of previously unheard material.

With Gone the Promises of Yesterday, the 24 Carat Black picks up right where they left off, great music. Not only does this have the warm, rhythmic vibe familiar with the 24 Carat Black, but it carries with it an energy above and beyond previous reissues. If there were an option to put more stars, I absolutely would.
