URB: Could you see yourself taking a more organic approach on future projects?
AWOL One: I wouldn’t say, like, no band type shit; I am not really into guitars, but I am into someone coming in and making some sounds on the turntable or an ill ass keyboard player where they bust some really sick frequencies, but I am really not into being on stage with a band and shit. That’s not really my style.
URB: Are there any thoughts on a cross genre collaboration possibly similar to 2mex’s involvement with Look Daggers?
AWOL One: Yeah, for sure. I am already doing something like that. DJ Crooks and I already have six songs done, and that is kind of like genre crossing because that will have a sound different to anything that I have released. We have been working on it for the last couple of years.
URB: You mentioned Xzibit earlier. How did it come about that he would executive produce this album?
AWOL One: I have actually known him since I was 19 or 20. that was kind of before anything was popping with him, even before he was on LOUD. He would just hangout; I would pick him up in my truck, and we would just rap and smoke blunts. I stayed in contact with him here and there, and we reconnected on some chill out shit, and I played him what I was working on and he was so hyped that he told me he wanted to help me finish the project. I think the fact that I have known him for so long and I have never asked him for anything, that I just looked at him as one of the rap homies rather than people who are asking him for shit, but he told me to say if anyone asked that question that I sold my soul to the devil [laughs].
URB: Listening to “Brains Out” and watching the studio coverage of the making of the song, it just seems like a very easy environment to create in; could you describe what it was like working with X on this project?
AWOL One: It was more of a no pressure thing than trying to make a single. When the album comes out there will be a remix that B-Real will be on. That one is a good one too. X dropped a different verse. It’s cool man.
