Amadou & Mariam
Magic Couple , The
Mali’s favorite love story, Amadou & Mariam, have been steadily pushing their music since the early ’90s, releasing three albums outside of their native Africa before being welcomed into the arms of the international spotlight. For those playing catch up in familiarizing themselves with the blind duos’ brand of African pop/rock/blues, there’s The Magic Couple, a collection of gems off of their three albums spanning from 1997 to 2002.
Amadou & Mariam are world renowned for their ability to blend musical influences from different cultures and continents. Inside, this record is a delightful aural stew that contains ingredients from reggae, blues and even electronic music all smothered over their native Malian speak. The Magic Couple is proof of the growth these two have experienced over the years. ‘C’est La Vie’ displays the maturity from simplistic guitar riffs to complex horn ensembles as seen on Welcome to Mali’s ‘Africa’, which features fellow countryman K’Naan. Even more impressive is the duo’s chemistry with one another, working harmoniously together whether instrumentally or vocally. ‘Beki Miri’ turns the duo into one voice and incorporates various instruments to make this a funktafied juke joint worthy of hot dance floor anywhere.
My call is that Amadou & Mariam will continue to make splashes both overseas and in America in the coming years. The Magic Couple is the definitive guide for any new fan looking to dive right in to the hypnotic rhythms of this West African duo.
