Poison Pen
Money Shot, The
You probably know Poison Pen. Not the actual Poison Pen, but chances are you have a friend just like him. He’s funny, overweight, loves booze, and is overall just a cool dude to hang out with. He’s not very respectful of anyone (including himself), but it’s what he does, so it’s all good. And the Brooklyn-native’s music reflects that. He’s not trying to prove himself lyrically, as his MySpace bio claims he’s done trying to show he’s the best rapper: now he just wants to entertain his audience.
The Money Shot is pretty entertaining. Poison could use some better production, but for the most part, he does a solid job cracking lyrical jokes (often in the form of witty punchlines) and providing the listeners with both a listenable and enjoyable album that ranges in content from booze to parties to girls, and not too much else. Things get a little political with Immortal Technique (obviously) on ‘The 2nd Amendment,’ but it doesn’t sound poorly done or uninspired at all. Besides Technique, the collaborations are sparse, with the only memorable appearances coming from a hyped-up M.O.P. and Silkk Da Shocker (yes, the No Limit soldier from years ago).
It’s not exactly a masterpiece, but The Money Shot is worth the listen in the right environment and with the right people. Just be sure to bring alcohol, and a lot of it: drinking with Poison Pen, you’ll probably run out a lot quicker than you planned to.
