It May seem ironic, but when Kanye was producing Jay’s upcoming release, The Blueprint 3, Jay got the idea to take out the production gimmicks from the album. He tells Billboard, “‘When he [Kanye] heard the beat, he said, “Man, this is just so hard! This has to be against everything–no auto-tune, none of that type of stuff!” He didn’t know what I was going to do or where I was going to take it, but it was actually his fault.’” So, all the songs they had already prepared for Blueprint had to be redone and “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune),” though it is a response of sorts to Kanye’s 808s And Heartbreak, it would be remiss to think it was mean-spirited.
