Mr. Jack White III is a very busy man. Following his line of successful musical collaborations’White Stripes, Ranconteurs’White uses his Midas touch (and not inconsiderable fame) to bring his latest project, Dead Weather, to the fore. And this time, it’s for his own record label as well.
For this project, Jack White tries his hands on drums, Alison Mosshart from the Kills, aka Baby Ruthless, leads the band on vocals, and Raconteurs members Dean Fertita plays guitar and Jack Lawrence plays bass (although everyone tends to trade off on instruments). Their new release, Horehound sounds pretty much what you would expect the Raconteurs to sound like if Alison Mosshart took the spot usually held for Brendan Benson. However, there is something special to this project. The band’s sound is more psychedelic and experimental than the Raconteurs, with lots of buzzing analog synths (or guitars that sound like buzzing analog synths. With Mosshart’s deep, bluesy voice, the band can throw in a bit of grunge just for kicks. Mosshart’s voice brings a new dynamic to the sound and is able to effectively convey emotion. In ‘Treat Me Like Your Mother,’ she threatens, C’mon look me in the eye, you wanna try to tell a lie, I bet you can’t you know why? I’m just like your mother. “3 Birds” may get dismissed simply because it’s an instrumental song, but it a unique breather right when the weight of the other rockers threatens to become overbearing.
Jack White’s name has turned into a type of brand that ensures quality, but he clearly does not act alone. This album showcases the fact that every member stepped up to this creative challenge. A thoroughly enjoyable departure until we hear from Jack and Meg.
