LA COKA NOSTRA: Interview

Hip-hop supergroup strikes back

How do you feel about doing Rock The Bells this year?
I’m lookin’ forward to it, unfortunately House of Pain won’t be doing it, it will probably just be La Coka Nostra. DJ Lethal has backed out of it because of some Limp Bizkit commitments he has. Unfortunately he made that choice, but La Coka’s gonna be out there and we gonna make it happen, it’s gonna be pretty much the same show.

Most of your fans are dubbed out in LCN tattoos, do you have any?
I don’t yet, but I know Slaine got one, Leth got one, I know Danny got one. It’s just the mood hasn’t strung me yet, I’m not opposed to it. I’m sure one drunken night on the road it will probably happen. When I see fans do it, it just blows my mind a little bit, it’s like “Wow you really are a fan!” It goes beyond a t-shirt, and as far as I can tell our [La Coka Nostra] whole existence is driven by the fans. I mean we kinda just got together, made some songs and released it online under the name La Coka Nostra. We had no idea what we were gonna do, it was kinda just like a collective of dudes coming together. Then it was driven by the fans into “Oh, people are digging what we’re doin’ here so lets make somethin’ happen with it, let’s make a record, let’s go on tour, let’s have some fun with it.”

Yeah, I read that you guys weren’t even planning on putting out a record at all.
Yeah, like I try to explain to people because a lot of people were like “Why’d you take so long?” [Laughs] None of us were mad about it, it’s a great thing to us because it’s fun and the people dig it, they’re demanding more so we were like “Let’s give ‘em more!” We’ve been driven by the fans, everything we’ve done it’s because we felt like we owed it to the people who wanted to hear it.

Last question, the album is done, you guys got the tours coming up, so what’s next?
Hit this road and get the word out. I think we’ve got a good opportunity to go from whatever Myspace fame and take it to the world of real legitimate… not that Myspace is illegitimate, I mean it’s done a lot of good. What I mean is just to take it out there and make it real and see what really happens, I mean these are all my friends, I enjoy being out on the road with them and if we’re out there being productive and doing productive things I wanna be apart of it. We’re doing that, and that’s how it feels to me so I’m in. We’re gonna be goin’ hard the rest of this year, and again, it really depends on the fans. I mean if there’s no demand, there’s no work and no reason to be somewhere, but if the demand is there we’re gonna be out.
