Da Brat- She was the first female rapper that made me sit right in front of the speaker with a pen and a pad just to catch what she was saying. Her flow was like 5 flows all at the same time. When I started rapping I rapped like Da Brat.
HONORABLE MENTIONS- Here are some other lyricist inside and outside of hip hop.
Tracy Chapman- Heavy, deep words relayed in a soft voice. She is the type of writer to make you think about a line she said for a while. her words resonate.
Nina Simone- Now if she was a rapper she would be the one all the all the rest were afraid of. This lady had mad swagger, she was G! She wasn’t afraid to write about what she believe was the truth even if it offended people. She was fearless and black civil rights icon. I love her for that.
Mystic- This female rapper had an album Cuts for Luck Scars for Freedom. If you havent heard look it up. its one of the reason my album sound the way it does, it made me care less about offending people and more about therapy. She has a nice tone to her voice and sings too.
Queen Latifah- One song alone made her one of the greatest in my opinion and thats U.N.I.T.Y!! She made such a relevant point in that song that was helped along by a wicked grove lead beat and strong female attitude.
Teena Marie- I shouldnt need to say why! Me and my band were listening to “Wishing On A Star” on the way to Glastonbury and everybody had there head knodding. Rappers now a days have to comand you to do that!
