SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO: Interview

Shaw and Ford move out of the blog haus

large SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO: Interview

Sitting down at the downtown Standard hotel with Simian Mobile Disco’s Jas Shaw and James Ford before they go off into an epic night at Electric Daisy Carnival, it looks like the party has already started. It’s loud and crowded, with Saturday night excitement is in the air —and the duo decidedly not sleeping till tomorrow.

URB: How are you feeling today? Jetlagged at all?
Jas: Yeah, and also LA in a mystery. It’s just so spread out; I don’t even know where I am.

URB: Do you and James both live in London?
Jas: Yes, we live walking distance away from each other in London. Which I think is part of the weirdness because like neither of us have car and we cycle or walk and we come over here and people are like “lets go just over there” and they are in a car. And I just sit there like “Really?” (laughing) It’s a very strange city. I get the feeling, because I have quite a few friends that live out here, that it’s quite difficult as a tourist to sort of really get a feel for things. If you don’t have your own car, you’re kind of stuck and also it seems like there are a lot of house parties. If you go out in New York or in London there are a lot of pubs and bars nearby and here it seems like you have to go to one friend’s house and stay there.

At this point James has disappeared momentarily somewhere in the party at the rooftop so Jas and I are just chatting up.

URB: Who shot the video for “I Believe”?
Jas: The guy who did that was Romain Gavras, he’s a quite famous French director. I think he shot it in Romania, they’re Romanian gypsies. We didn’t go actually with him. He’s working on a feature film at the moment too. He did the video for Justice’s “Stress” and that caused a big stir in France.
