Cookbook – I Love the 80’s (Review)

I Love the 80's

I Love the 80’s, the debut album of West Coast indie rapper Cookbook (of LA Symphony), is a hip-hop journey worthy of a VH1 nostalgia documentary. From track titles named ‘Molly Ringwald’, ‘Reganomics’, ‘Andre the Giant’ and ‘The Huxtables,’ to catchy beats containing samples from Peter Gabriel, Wang Chung and U2, this intriguing album does what it can to pay tribute to the era of the Brat Pack. But for Cookbook, it goes beyond that. ‘I do love the music of the 80’s,’ he explains. ‘But I for me this album is the story of where I came from and how I grew up.’

Although I Love the 80’s is uniquely creative, the level of production on this record might leave something to be desired for those used to hearing clean mainstream digitization. However, aficionados of underground hip-hop will appreciate its rawness. And you can’t really complain since the release is available as a free download on www.sphereofhiphop.com.
