Plasticines, The

About Love

Ok, let’s get one thing straight – making really watered down pop-rock and trying to be cute equals not cute at all. In fact, it’s really just plain annoying. I have no idea how old the Plasticines are, but they’re too old to be making the kind of music that they do, which kinda sounds like Gwen Stefani formed a punk band and signed a deal with Disney. Of course the Plasticines subject matter is not Disney material. ‘Bitch’ makes this perfectly clear. However the distilled attitude of the entire project makes it come off as tired and contrived. Some tracks stand out a little more than the rest. The infectious bass line and rapidly climbing guitar riff of ‘Time to Leave’ shows that the Plasticines have at least a smidgen of musical talent. To be honest, the best tracks are the acoustic guitar numbers ‘I Am Down’ and the album closing ‘Coney Island.’ It is here that the vocal talents of Katty Besnard truly shine. These are also two of the few tracks on the album that don’t sound like self-aware pop-punk posturing.

Perhaps what makes the Plasticines music so painful to listen to is the fact that the band has publicly stated that they are upset with the current French music scene. If you’re trying to rebel against mainstream music you MUST come with something better than this. Putting out a cheesy pop album to counteract pop music is like starting a riot to protest the war in Iraq. I’m not a fan of hypocrisy or half-assed music. The Plasticines are examples of both.
