Luke Top
Friends
A veteran of collaborative projects, Luke Top makes his solo appearance in his first full length album, Friends. It’s style is pretty folkish with a little hint of country at times and then rock and roll at others. It is not surprising that the album was mostly self-recorded in a backyard bungalow, because it sounds organic and unforced. His voicing is Jim Morrison meets Damian Rice. The musicianship is quite brilliant, bringing you in and refusing to let you go with its perfect timing and precise melodies. “Plainest Drought” and “Sacred Room” reveals this truth pefectly. But the “distant-much reverbed-harmony overkill-effect” on Luke Top’s voice makes you only assume that he’s saying something worth listening to. A look at the lyrics May help, but being able to hear it on the album could make this LP stand out.
