Are you guys working on a new album?
Alex: Yes.
When’s that going to come out?
Alex: 2010. It’s like 75 percent done.
OK, so with the stuff that you’re working on now, what’s influencing you guys outside of your stuff and your labelmates’ that you’re listening to?
Alex: James just turned us on to this band Flash and the Pan, that’s something I’ve been listening to a lot. I’ve recently been getting back into some late-90’s Hip Hop.
Nick: The new Dilla record, Jay Stay Paid. It’s fucking amazing. Dilla’s a huge reference for us. I feel like posthumous albums, you know there’ll be a couple good tracks but like, I really feel like that’s almost on par with Donuts. And it’s really exciting because if there is that much good shit sitting around, there’s probably more. There are a couple of beats on there- we were in Paris in this apartment and we downloaded it on iTunes and we were just sitting around the table like (pumps fist in excitement). The new Grizzy Bear record is really good- obviously they’re really great songwriters but I think the production is really really, really, good. Yeah, the new Dilla and the new Grizzly Bear are the two things I’m listening to the most, right now.
Cool. Let’s say there was no such thing as music. What do you see yourselves doing for a living right now? And don’t say kill yourself.
Nick: I honestly have no idea. The last job I had I was working in a wine shop…
Alex: I like movies, so yeah, something like that. Film, writing, something like that.
Nick: I have no idea. I have no backup plan.
Maybe by now you’d be own the wine shop.
Nick: Yeah, I’d still be working in a wine store, which was fine. It’s actually a really great job.
Alex: If you told me I had to run a fishing boat, I wouldn’t be pissed. I would totally work on a boat. I love the water.
That could work. You guys could join forces, one with the boat, one with the booze.
Alex: A booze cruise! That’s the answer. We’d be running a booze cruise. A silent booze cruise.
