Mind Chaos
‘This is small town music, this is big town music,’ lead singer Ben Grubin chants on ‘Song Away.’ ‘This is new form music, this is old form music, this is on the rise music.‘ And Mind Chaos is exactly these things. Through addictively upbeat vibes, Portland, Oregon-based Hockey produce a refreshing, soulful sound that is both danceable and relaxing’perfect music to modify your mood. If Hockey represents any one principle, it must be that nothing should ever be taken too seriously. With that’s out of the way, what’s left is having fun and being progressive. Their sound is at times raw, lo-fi rock, and at other times retro pop, complete with cheesy synth fills. Either way, Mind Chaos is a contagious style of party music. Funky, syncopated bass lines, twangy guitar fills all melt together into a fuzzy wall of sound capable of bringing people to their feet, ready to rage.
However, don’t expect Hockey to produce the same worn-out rock sound you might hear at your local house party. Unlike the guitar-bass-drums-vocals method many other bands live by, Hockey incorporate more uncommon instruments, from harmonicas to Hammond B3 organs, as well as obscure synth samples. In breaking away from the usual sound, Mind Chaos is a fresh flavor of party music, new upbeat grooves complemented by soulful instrumentation and beautifully grungy vocals.
