Volume: the Best of Paul van Dyk

The unfortunate truth is that trance studio albums just do not do justice to the energy and passion of a live performance. Because trance music relies on so much more sensory perception than simply the acoustic aspects, trance records often grow monotonous, each track generally indistinguishable from the next. However, this is where Paul van Dyk excels. Volume: the Best of Paul van Dyk shattered my expectations, but what else should I have expected from one of the world’s most prominent, most decorated and most influential trance DJs? For avid PVD fans, Volume might not capture the obscurities or true breadth of his music, instead choosing to focus on the German’s more “mainstream” tracks. But for the more unfamiliar van Dyk listener, Volume will treat your aural buds to a tasty electronic treat. From pure synth-powered trance, to more exotic breaks and downtempo grooves, Volume draws strength from its varied sounds, tempos and moods. “We Are Alive” is pure electronic exaltation, his remix of Justin Timberlake’s “What Goes Around…Comes Around” is a viscous mess of synth fuzz and bass kick attack, and “Holding On To Nothing” is an ambient string drama. His style is all his own, his sound like no other. If Volume teaches us nothing new about PVD, at very least it reinforces his role within the upper echelon of international DJs.
