My Best Remixes

So, what exactly is techno-perfection? It’s rather romantic to think that the answer lies in variety but let’s face it: electro is half-jokingly notorious for having the same booms and blips throughout entire albums (or daresay catalogs). With French producer Joakim’s latest compilation My Best Remixes, there are some songs that are quite unique while there are many others that seem to bleed into each other. Perhaps one’s experience with the genre as a listener is the determining factor for just what this ratio is on this album. The first track is a rather nice, upbeat remix of Annie’s “Always Too Late.” Orchestral-sounding drum rolls and circuitry-made ghost-wailings lace the vocals very nicely and definitely demand attention doing so. “Ethnic Instrument” is a nice choice for number two here. It is just as in your face as track one but with more of a rock-edge to it (thanks to heavy guitar stabs). “Pocket Piano” is crazy as well: with it’s numerous change-ups and chops. Notice a pattern though? Once the first half (the better half) of the album is over with, the second half just seems to all melt together into one giant ball of tech-wax. Is it a lack of vocals? Such a notion has a hard time being ruled out but for the most part, the compositions just seem a little too close to each other (like old English royal families). While there are some gems on My Best Remixes, Joakim seemed to deliver a project that is unfortunately yet undoubtedly lopsided.
