Music is all about moments, and mixtapes (what kids these days call “playlists”) are meant to capture the creator’s mood. So let’s try to figure out what was going on in the minds of Phoenix when they created this exclusive mixtape for French label, Kitsune. Known for effervescent, electronic-tinged pop, one might expect a slew of offerings from peers like Air and Daft Punk, but instead we get a collection of quaint psychedelia, as interpreted by bands as diverse as Tangerine Dream and Kiss (yes, Kiss had a song that, in theory, could have been a stoner jam, and here it is – “Love Theme From Kiss”).

Kitsune Tabloid is basically a collection of 18 surprising, quirky, laze-inducing jams by primarily well-known artists (Roxy Music, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Dusty Springfield, Elvis Costello and um… D’Angelo, among others). It seems Phoenix was looking to soundtrack a happy season of peace, and, as they are when concocting their own music, they prove quite successful.
