Minus 8
Slow Motion
Music that is “happy” has a very odd tendency to trigger one’s gag reflex. Whether it is about some bald dude trying to call people on a banana, or another bald dude belting out something called “Shiny, Happy People,” it seems damn hard to make something both light and breezy without inducing nausea. Luckily, Swiss producer, Minus 8’s newest album Slow Motion is proof that no matter how rare, it can be done. This album is a somewhat peculiar hybrid of genres. Upon first impression, chances are it could get mistaken for an electro album. Yeah, it certainly has electronic elements throughout, but it is much more tactile and instrument-laden than expected (well, either that or he’s genius with samples). It’s not too bright either. It has material that feels like summertime but not in the obvious ways one bit. “Soverato ‘09″ is a great example of this. Amidst various percussion (drum kits, shakers, guiros), sweeping xylophones and a breathy sax, there is just a great feeling about it all. It’s relaxing enough for pure enjoyment, but creeps lazily, leaving the mood mostly up to the listener. While perhaps not every track features exactly the perfect match vocally, they’re not too far off. Whether “Hustler” is supposed to be taken 100% seriously is up for debate, but its smooth jazz intro melts right away into a slow, yet undeniably warm groove. Sorry Raffi- you may have the kids on lock, but the grown folks belong to Minus 8.
