The Zoo York State of Mind film premiere at Sunshine Theater, on Houston Street in Manhattan, was a sausage fest, packed with a 98% male to 2% female ratio of young hipsters and their skateboards. I arrived for the 8pm show without a ticket, wearing very dark glasses so no one could see how painful it was for me to be there without expecting to see Harold Hunter (RIP). I asked Adam G from Zoo York if he had an extra ticket and he said, “No,” and then pulled one out of his pocket to give to an adorable kid with a board and a reddish Jewfro. Annoyed, I sniped, “I guess I should’ve brought my skateboard if wanted a ticket,” and instantaneously felt like a deuche bag for hating on a pre-teen. Of course he should’ve gotten the ticket instead of me. Duh. My Vision Streetwear kicks are gathering dust in the closet these days. Adam G, not knowing me from a hole in the wall, was cool enough to let my grimy attitude slide, and went inside and emerged a few moments later with another ticket for me. Kudos, G.
Jacked up on the sugar-free Red Bull that was given away outside the movie theater, I pondered the odd choice of distributing that manic-behavioral-inducing beverage to a bunch of hyperactive skaters who actually needed to sit still in the dark for the next hour. Gatorade, which sponsored part of the flic, would’ve been a better choice of beverage.
I entered the over-capacity theater and took a seat in the back, next to the director’s wife, who was one of the eight females in attendance, including myself. People who couldn’t find seats were standing against the walls and sitting on the floor. No doubt a few people didn’t actually have tickets. Skateboarding is not a crime and neither is crashing a free skateboarding movie premiere.
