ABE Duque
Don't Be So Mean
A mixture of psychosis thrashing synthesizers and tribal war drums are the only words that can accurately describe ABE Dugue’s newest LP Don’t Be So Mean. I suppose I could end the review there but to do this record justice we shall press on.
Native New Yorker and vintage synth mastermind ABE Duque has been mixing and remixing since the early 1990’s. His unique skill behind his tools of trade help him to craft wonderful electronic soundscapes for listeners to lose themselves in. Don’t Be So Mean combines otherworldly drum patterns, haunting synths and keyboards and jazz ensembles all into one heaping bowl of electronic oatmeal mush. ‘Salute the Dawn’ begins as a sun drenched jazz tune but quickly evolves into an electrical storm of epic proportions while tracks like ‘Why They Need US’ and ‘Life Is So Good To Me’ cut straight to the chase, unleashing pounding bass on the unsuspecting listener.
The overall production value of the album rides high throughout. Don’t Be So Mean is an adventure from start to finish, exploring a few different genres while keeping rooted in the aim of making you dance. Also, have you seen the cover of this record? ABE Duque is not to be messed with.
