Georgia Anne Muldrow
Presents: Ms. One & The Gang
West coast funkstress Georgia Anne Muldrow pulls together some of hip-hop and neo-soul’s sharpest wits on the smooth compilation Georgia Anne Muldrow Presents: Ms. One & the Gang. This compilation brings both seasoned veterans like Big Pooh, Black Milk and fellow funkateer Dudley Perkins as well as some fresh and promising voices to the mic. Tracks like ‘Drunken’ with D-Moe and funky Dudley bring the heat with thumping drums accompanied by smooth vocals and inter-stellar rhymes. ‘2 MC’ which features Detroit beatsmith Black Milk and Rapper Big Pooh of the esteemed Little Brother crew keep the funk alive but add a complex lyrical twist to this delightfully primitive mix.
Surprisingly, the weakest songs on this compilation are the ones with the orchestrator of the project, Georgia Anne Muldrow. Although a talented singer, Muldrow consistently displays her shortcomings through her repetitive vocal inflection. ‘Mr. President’ and ‘To Dance’ seem to blend seamlessly as Muldrow refuses to change her style.
Despite a few hiccups in the journey, heavy cosmic funk with a steady mix of hip-hop soul make this record a bumping ride through outer space.
