Hermas Zapoula – Espoir (Review)

Hermas Zapoula

Espoir

West African native Hermas Zopoula is a very interesting character. He’s a moped enthusiast, the youngest of 36 children, he’s an internet caf’ proprietor and according to his bio on Asthmatic Kitty Records, his record label, Espoir is his first international recording.
The distinct sounds of the Dark Continent are prominent on this record. Not just musically but production wise as well, with the hustle and bustle of a busy Burkina Faso street present in the background of nearly every track. ‘Nibina kan bagniainai’ flows with African spirit as the upbeat guitar riff compliments the shuffling footsteps and passing truck in the background. Following in the footsteps of the late Bob Marley, Zopoula uses his native speak and sound to paint pictures of a dusty West African street in the hot sun.
Zopoula’s use of strictly acoustic guitar and mics with absolutely no pop-filters heighten the listening experience, making it sound like a field recording from start to finish. My only qualm with this record is that it is far too short: it’s longest song being just over 4 minutes. Other than that, Espoir is a strong start to a promising international musician’s career.
