Loss 4 Wordz

It’s hard to stand out as an artist after leaving a group. Particularly when that group keeps its members employed with 250 shows a year, has released 10 albums, and has a current gig as Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night House Band. However, former Roots Crew Member Scratch is doing his own thing and Loss 4 Wordz proves that he is doing it well.

The beatboxing wiz decided to take a different turn on this sophomore effort. Scratch is still providing mouthy bass lines and creative effects, but this time around he has brought traditional instrumentation and a combination of male and female harmonious melody to the forefront. The guest appearances include notables such as Kanye West, Estelle, and Music Soulchild. But he also surprises us with the presence of Damon Albarn with Talib Kweli on ‘Too Late’, Arthur Baker on ‘Girl I’m Gonna Make You’, Daniel Bedingfield on “If Our Love Was A Song” and Jonas Myron on ‘I’ll Be There For You.’

Loss 4 Wordz is an assortment of mature, sexy, cohesive, and soulful/hiphop/techno/R&B/dancehall sounds. Strangely, the variety seems to go together just fine on one album.

Scratch’s unique production and brilliant concepts reminds us that although he may be loss for words, he is not loss for originality.
