Savath & Savalas
La Llama
Savath & Savalas is what becomes of Eva Puyuelo Muns, Guillermo Scott Herren, and Roberto Carlos Lange when they come together. In the trio: Robert is the beatmaker (and the new addition), Eva is the vocalist, and Scott Herren is the musician/producer. La Llama is the result of their union: a musical exchange of South American languages, downbeat melodies, and folk and acid experimentation.
Influenced by the Recife independent music scene of the 1970’s, La Llama was created out of a desire to create songs in Catalan and Spanish by studying older folk records of that period. Recorded in an apartment on the Bowery, a street on the lower East Side of New York City, La Llama is a rare enjoyment created with a zero budget yet with 100% creativity and authenticity.
The LP is no doubt unapologetically experimental. ‘Pajaros En Cadaques’ and ‘Adeu’ proves this point easily. Yet the album is seasoned and quite familiar in an esoteric kind of way. The music is not imposing but quite inviting as each instrument does its own part. The melodies sung by Eva has seamless harmony with much calculated reverb. This shows best in ‘Carajillo’, ‘Me Voy’, and ‘La Loba’. The album does have a sense of a worldy-esque vibe to it yet it is pure and native at the same time. The use of synths and acoustic guitar merge well giving off this feeling in ‘Una Cura’ and ‘Pavo Real’.
Although there are moments where you wish for the upbeat, there is a solace to La Llama. For all of you non-spanish and catalan speakers out there, your mind is not forced to translate any of the words either, but simply inspired to enjoy the ride. A ride that three selfless musicians have generously decided to provide to us out of ‘the passion’ or should I say, out of ‘the llama’.
