Hip Hop Hoodios
Carne Masada
At first listen it appears that Carne Masadais a throwback. A rewind of the era of hip-hop where running man and the kid and play kick was the present day stinky leg and superman. Hip-hop Hoodies seems to possess this feel on the first track ‘Time Square’, with the quick drum and ringing horns characteristic of that era of jazz fused and pulsating bassline productions of the late 80’s and early 90’s. But one thing is different: an added spanish feel, this along with additional instruments and spanish sprinkled every now and again. But as the album continues, surprises arise.
‘Havan Nagila Nama’ will make you scratch your head. ‘Hoodia Para Mi’ usage of the line: the rich want to get rich/the poor wants to be poor/I just want to find/ a nice jewish hore’ is strangely appalling. ‘Kike on the mic’ along with it’s racial epithets will make you wonder if this is all a joke. The Jewish member of Hip Hop Hoodies is the culprit, making references to himself and to his people. The rest of the album seems like a playpen of wordplay that just overall comes off more as a joke than musically ingenious. Race, war, stereotypes, and even nose jobs are some topics touched on through basic hip-hop lyrics.
‘Viva La Guantanamera’ and ‘1492′ are noteworthy tracks to take seriously but its outnumbered by too many unfunny offensive stand-up records to shine effectively on our consciousness.
