Trentemoller – Harbour Boat Trips – Copenhagen

It’s no mistake that Anders Trentemoller was named the Best Chillout and Best Electronica artist at the 2008 Beatport Awards. His original tracks and remixes have a sound all their own, an electronic mood unlike any other. But for his newest endeavor, the Dane has embarked on a (successful) new adventure. On Harbour Boat Trips – Copenhagen, his first foray into the mix album genre, Trentemoller has assembled tracks by eighteen of his fellow Danish musicians, (specifically those native to Copenhagen), into one smooth, relaxing compilation. In addition to every musician/group being Danish, they all have something else in common that ties Harbour Boat Trips – Copenhagen together beautifully: their inspiration. For this album, each artist’s contribution is a musical interpretation of a certain Danish harbor and its surroundings. So unlike the many mix albums that exist, Trentemoller’s mix is cohesive in terms of both mixing and its inspiration. Spanning various genres from alternative rock to electronica, Harbour Boat Trips – Copenhagen runs the gamut in instrumentation, lyrics and emotion. Even though each track is based on the same watery scenery, each track is a markedly individualized interpretation of the musicians themselves. Some tracks are smoother, some more coarse. Some are ambient, airy rhythms, some are grungy, guitar-powered anthems. So while his awards may deem him a ‘chillout’ and ‘electronica’ artist, Harbours proves that Trentemoller has both an eclectic taste in music, as well as the remarkable ability to fuse distinctly different genres into one continuous mix.
