To a certain extent, Myth has always been a vital ingredient to hip-hop. This isn’t to say that this culture, which prides itself on “keeping it real”, is actually doing the exact opposite, but rather that hip-hop has always spun larger than life tales, made some of its contributors iconic, and consistently cloaked its artists with identities that often carry with them a larger than life presence. In an industry where artists are more than ever seeking to be themselves and bring balance back to the culture, it is only fitting that myth is being used to breathe new life into the art form. Khujo (Goodie Mobb/Dungeon Family) and Jneiro Jarel (Dr. Who Dat? Shape of Broad Minds)have joined forces as Willie Isz. Jneiro might best sum up this crew on “Blast Off”: “We like butter on burnt bagels: we are about to smooth this whole thing out.” It would be incredibly limiting to say that they are merely a group trying to make the best out of a bad situation. Simply put, the music Willie Isz has put out on their debut project, Georgiavania, is nothing short of next level. Creating the myth of Geogiavania, the 51st US state, Willie Isz is the execution of artists interested in exploring new musical possibilities. Those musical possibilities include collaborations with Dave Sitek and Tunde Adebimpe of TV On The Radio and various other musicians who helped make each track a very different experience. Whether Jneiro is singing on the out this world “I Didn’t Mean To” or Khujo providing his signature growl-driven rhymes over the pirate themed meets Dirty South chopped/screwed “The Grussle”, which is a surprising banger, or the funk. Pop Rock, dungeon family inspired “Blast Off”, Willie Isz’s execution should not be lauded because it is so different than anything else you will hear out there but because they throw funk, rock. electro, collaborations with artists outside of hip-hop, and a wiliness to talk about misrepresentation in hip-hop, misplaced societal values, and mistreated relationships all into the creative melting pot and churn out the musical utopia known as Georgiavania. Clearly, and thankfully, this is one instance where the product is actually larger than the mythology used to create it. The results? A psychedelic journey quite unlike any other that could very well result in the creation of a completely new category of music simply known as Utopia Rap because musically it doesn’t get much better than this.
